Instructor: Marilyn McCord Adams. This course meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12:30 p.m. – 1:45 p.m. in Caldwell 103.

How can God and evil exist together in the same world? It seems that God by nature would be able and willing to prevent or eliminate it. Yet, experience acquaints us with evils in horrendous degrees. This course will examine various approaches to this problem taken by analytic philosophers of religion since the mid-twentieth century. Approaches will include the best of all possible worlds theodicy, the free will defense, and various soul-making theodicies. Authors will include Mackie, Pike, Plantinga, Hick, Swinburne, Adams, and van Inwagen.
