Modern Philosophy (PHIL 220/001)
Instructor: Patrick Connolly. This course meets Monday – Friday from 8:00 a.m. – 9:30 a.m. in Caldwell 105.
The purpose of this course is to introduce students to some of the major thinkers and topics in the history of modern philosophy. In this course we’ll be particularly concerned with questions about the fundamental features of reality. Are human minds and human bodies distinct objects?
Do material objects really exist? Can human thought be understood without appeal to an immaterial soul? We’ll read selections from Rene Descartes, Elizabeth of Bohemia, Thomas Hobbes, Margaret Cavendish, George Berkeley, Anne Conway, and Baruch Spinoza. One previous course in philosophy is required.
